Ka Shui International Development Limited’s Flame‑retardant Magnesium Alloy Wins HKIE MIS Industrial Award – Innovation Award 2025–26
Driving Material Innovation through ESG: Lightening the Planet, Safeguarding Lives
On 10 April 2026, Ka Shui International Development Limited (“Ka Shui”) received the Second Prize in the Innovation Category of the Industrial Award 2025–26 from the Manufacturing, Industrial and Systems Division (MIS) of The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE), for its independently developed Flame‑retardant Magnesium Alloy Technology System. This award not only recognizes Ka Shui’s breakthroughs in materials science but also confirms the Company’s successful integration of environmental, social and governance (ESG) principles into core innovation, driving technological transformation through responsible development.
Environmental (E): Carbon Reduction and Green Manufacturing
Flame‑retardant Magnesium Alloy has a density of approximately 1.74 g/cm³, making it around 36% lighter than aluminum alloy and 77% lighter than steel. Every 10 kg reduction in vehicle weight can reduce carbon emissions by approximately 120 to 150 kg over its full life cycle. The related production process also reduces the use of SF₆, supporting low‑carbon and green manufacturing.
Social (S): Safety Commitment to Safeguard Lives
In an open‑flame test at 1,100°C, the Flame‑retardant Magnesium Alloy remained unignited for over five minutes, providing passengers with a critical window for escape. Compared with traditional techniques, the associated production process also reduces flammability risks and enhances overall operational safety.
Governance (G): Compliance‑driven and Transparent Governance
Core patents for the flame‑retardant technology have been granted, and the products comply with RoHS, WEEE, ELV and FAA requirements, providing downstream customers with a “green passport” to global markets. The Company strengthens governance through standardized and transparent mechanisms, enhancing customers’ ESG performance and supply chain resilience.
Ka Shui stated that the R&D process has accumulated more than 300 formulations and over thousands rounds of verification, to establish a “composition–process–performance” database that shifts research and development from trial‑and‑error toward precision design. Related technologies will see accelerated applications across such fields as new energy vehicles, low-altitude economy, aerospace and high‑end electronics.
The HKIE MIS Industrial Award aims to recognize achievements with engineering innovation and industrial application value. Ka Shui ’s award demonstrates Hong Kong’s R&D strength in high‑end materials and green technology, with ESG embedded throughout the entire process of technological innovation, manufacturing and application. Moving forward, Ka Shui will continue to drive the standardization and large‑scale application of Flame‑retardant Magnesium Alloy in terms of safety, performance and mass production. By collaborating with industrial chain partners to build an ecosystem, it allows innovation and sustainable development to go hand in hand.
